Looking for an IT Security Label for your building?
More and more people search for "IT Security Label". They want to know whether the IT and the smart systems in a building are safe. Here you can read what exists, and where the
What do people mean by an IT Security Label?
By an IT Security Label, people usually mean a quality mark that says something is digitally secure. Such labels exist, but they are about products, not buildings:
- Germany. The Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) has the IT-Sicherheitskennzeichen, in English the IT Security Label. Manufacturers can apply for it voluntarily for products such as routers and smart devices.
- United States. The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark is a voluntary label for smart consumer devices. The programme is still being set up.
- European Union. The Cyber Resilience Act sets requirements for the security of products with software. Since 11 September 2026, manufacturers must report serious vulnerabilities. From 11 December 2027, most requirements apply, with the CE marking as proof.
A security label for a whole building does not exist
A building is not a product. Dozens of systems from different suppliers are connected to each other, and that changes with every new installation. A label that promises that a whole building is safe would therefore not be honest. What is possible: making visible what there is. That is the first step towards security.
First see, then secure
Climate control, access, cameras, lifts and meters in a modern building work together more and more often. To do that, they are connected to a network, and often to the internet. The attacks on supermarket refrigeration in 2026 showed what can go wrong.
The problem was not that nobody knew how to secure such a system. The problem was that nobody knew the system was open. What you cannot see, you cannot secure.
What the IT-Label says about security
This is what the IT-Label shows
- Which smart building systems there are and whether they work together
- Whether the building management system (BMS) is connected to the IT network
- Whether networks are separated
- Whether there is security and monitoring on the network
- Where the technical rooms are and whether they are locked
This is what the IT-Label does not say
- That the building is safe
- Whether a system can be hacked: it is not a hacking test
- How secure the building systems themselves are
- How secure the tenant's own IT is
- It is not an information security certificate, such as ISO 27001
