Everyone understands that a building cannot function without electricity. That is why the meter cupboard is taken seriously. There are diagrams, circuits, safety devices, inspection moments and clear responsibilities. If the power goes out, everyone knows exactly who to call.
But what about digital infrastructure? Where does the internet enter the building? Where is the MER or SER located? How old is the cabling? Who has access to the server room? Is there redundancy? And does anyone actually know exactly how the network is structured?
The question that arises is simple: why don't we yet treat digital infrastructure with the same obviousness as electricity? In this article we explain the parallel, and show why the server room is becoming the digital heart of the modern building.

Who manages the switches? Who maintains the server room? Which infrastructure belongs to the landlord, and what must the tenant arrange themselves?
This touches on the concept of digital demarcation: the delineation of who is responsible for what in the digital chain. As long as that delineation remains unclear, discussions, delays and risks arise, precisely at the moment when an organization needs the infrastructure most.

A good digital technical room therefore deserves attention for physical security, access control, cooling, power supply and UPS, monitoring, tidy and labeled cabling, fire safety, redundancy and documentation. The digital meter cupboard deserves the same attention as the electrical meter cupboard.
What if this room is not in order?
