Picture a modern office. The energy label is excellent, fiber runs all the way into the building, the workspaces are well designed, and the property looks future-proof at every turn. You walk in, want to make a quick call, and watch the bars on your phone disappear. In the meeting room it just about works, in the elevator it doesn't, and in the parking garage it doesn't work at all.
It is a recognizable picture, and it is becoming a serious point of attention more and more often. A building that fulfills all its digital ambitions on paper can disappoint in practice on a point that no one measured beforehand: how well can you make calls and use mobile internet inside it?
The central question of this article is therefore simple. We measure almost everything about a building. But do we actually know how mobile connectivity performs indoors? And if not, why does this component remain unnamed?
Sustainable construction and mobile signals
Modern buildings are increasingly well insulated. HR++ and triple glazing, coatings, thick concrete structures and steel all contribute to excellent energy performance. However, these same materials can affect the passage of mobile radio signals. What is good for the energy label is not automatically good for indoor coverage.
The result is an apparent contradiction. A sustainable building is not automatically a digitally accessible building. The exterior can have excellent coverage while the signals are dampened inside. This makes mobile coverage a performance you only really know once you actually measure it, floor by floor.
This connects to a broader principle that is the subject of the relationship between energy performance and digital quality: two matters that do not exclude each other, but do deserve separate attention.
What a tenant is not told beforehand
Before a lease is signed, a tenant receives a great deal of information. The number of parking spaces, the energy label, the available square meters, the installations present: it is all neatly documented. Mobile coverage is rarely included. The fact that this topic is absent from almost every brochure is not strange, but it is notable, much like the fact that IT infrastructure is missing from every rental brochure.
The questions that consequently remain unanswered are exactly the questions that matter in practice:
- How good is 4G and 5G coverage actually inside the building?
- Do different mobile providers perform equally well everywhere?
- What is the coverage like on different floors, in meeting rooms, elevators and parking garages?
- Is an indoor coverage solution present, or necessary?
- What happens when wifi or the fixed connection fails?
- Can mobile connectivity serve as a redundant connection?
- Is the building prepared for further growth in mobile data traffic and connected devices?
This last question touches on the topic of network redundancy: if the fixed line fails, a strong mobile connection can sometimes make the difference between continuing to work and coming to a standstill.
A building can be called digitally advanced and still be a dead zone the moment the door closes behind you.
From facility to business continuity
The development of 5G and future mobile technologies is changing the role of connectivity. Organizations increasingly use cloud applications, AI, mobile devices, IoT sensors, access control and smart building technology. All these functions rely on a connection that is available throughout the building, not just near the window.
